Usually, a self-propelled lawn mower has a built-in self-propel system which consists of a series of pulleys, a belt drive and a small transmission system. If you want to disable or disconnect the self-propel system on a lawn mower, you can easily do it.
You have to remove the drive belt which connects the transmission system to the main shaft of the mower's engine. It is a straightforward process that you can do easily by following our tips.
Step 1. At first, disable the lawn mower engine by disconnecting the spark plug wire from the mower's spark plug. It will prevent the accidental starting while you work near the mower blade.
Step 2. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws which are holding the transmission cover onto the top of the mower and then place the cover off to the side. It will expose the main transmission housing and the transmission pulley.
Step 3. Now, locate the setscrew between the transmission and the transmission pulley. Rotate it counterclockwise, as you pull up on the drive belt which is attached to the pulley. When you can slip the belt off the pulley, stop to turning the setscrew.
Step 4. In this step, place the mower on its side so that the air cleaner will be facing upward. It will prevent the gasoline from getting into the air cleaner.
Step 5. Next, pull the belt through the access hole in the mower deck. After that, slip the belt off the pulley which is mounted between the bottom of the mower blade and the mower deck.
You should remove the nut which is holding the knife onto the main shaft when you cannot slip the belt past the blade. Then remove the belt and blade and try to reinstall the blade.
Step 6. In the end, place the mower back onto its wheels. Use your screwdriver to reattach the transmission cover with the original screws.
Safety instructions:
1. Always try to keep all the nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition.
2. While the engine is running, never try to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment.
3. Mower blades are extremely sharp, and they can cut your skin. So, you need to wear gloves and wrap the blade when servicing them. Also, use extra caution to be safe.
That's how you can disconnect the self-drive unit from a self-propelled lawn mower.
